1. How can Firefighters work 2 different jobs?

For their firefighter “job,” full-time paid firefighters usually work a 24 hr. shift which is followed by 1 or more days off (2 days off is the most common). This allows firefighters the time to own and operate businesses to supplement their income. Other firefighters listed on the site are either retired, part-time paid, or are solely volunteers.

2. I am a firefighter with a business. How do I sign up?

Signing up your firefighter-owned business is easy on the Firefighter-Biz (a.k.a. FirefighterBiz.com) web site. You can either sign up online or by mail. Click on the "add your listing" tab in the left margin of each web page. To sign up online, click on the "sign up online" button. Fill out the application and submit it. To sign up by mail, click on the "sign up by mail" button to download the application. Print this application and mail it to the address at the bottom of the form. After we verify that your firefighter status, your business will be added to the listings. Because we are signing businesses up for free, there is no need to send any money.

3. How can you list the firefighter-owned businesses for free while the other web sites charge for this?

At the present time, my wife and I are covering the expenses of this web site. It is our hope that individuals, families, businesses, and corporations will become sponsors. Once that happens, we can better get the word out about this web site. Why would they do that? Because they appreciate the work that firefighters do while "on-duty" and want to help firefighters and their families while "off duty."

4. I would like to support this web site. How can I become a sponsor?

We have recently added a "Sponsors" page. This page lists those individuals, families, businesses, and corporations that want to support firefighters by helping pay for the running of this web site. The business sponsors may have a link to their web site, an email link, and / or a phone # next to the company name. The corporate sponsors will have the same info, but they will be able to have a banner ad somewhere on the site (available approximately Jan. 2009). The business and corporate sponsors do not have to be firefighter-owned, but we think that many firefighter-owned businesses will choose to be sponsors. This is not a requirement to be listed in our national directory of firefighter-owned businesses.

5. How did you pick the charities that you donate to?

We at Firefighter-Biz wanted to pick charities that are “fire” related. One is a foundation (National Fallen Firefighters Foundation) that helps the families of firefighters killed in the line of duty. They also have created a memorial to honor those heroic firefighters that have given their lives, the ultimate sacrifice. The other charity (I.A.F.F. National Burn Camp) hosts a camp for kids that have suffered burn injuries. Many of these kids are self-conscious about their burn scars; they don’t like the way that their scars look, so they cover them up. This camp allows kids to “uncover” and forget about their scars. They get to have a great time with other kids just like themselves. The camps are held throughout the country and are sponsored by local I.A.F.F. Firefighter unions.

6. Can I recommend a charity?

Absolutely. At the present time, we have chosen 2 to donate to. As we sign up more sponsors, thus growing the amount of money to donate, we will be looking for more charities to give to. Recommendations for charities should be emailed to Scott@Firefighter-Biz.com.

7. Is Firefighter-Biz owned by a firefighter?

Yes, it is. The owner is a Firefighter (Engineer-EMT) in the Central Florida area.

8. I am a firefighter and my wife owns a business. Can I list it on your site?

At the present time, we are not allowing spouses of firefighters to list their businesses. If you are a firefighter and are listed as “part-owner” of the business and your name is on the occupational/ business license, then it would be o.k. In the future, we might reconsider this position and start allowing businesses owned solely by spouses of firefighters, to be listed.

9. I am a firefighter, but I don’t “own” a business. I am a real estate agent; a business license isn’t required. Can I be listed on your web site?

After much consideration, we have decided to allow firefighters in your situation to be listed. You are in effect “self-employed” in a commission-based industry and have a license to sell real estate. Others in a similar situation might be a firefighter that works for a mortgage broker.
