September 11, 2001 will be a day that America remembers forever. That morning, nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger aircraft. Two of the aircraft were intentially crashed into the World Trade Center; flight 11 impacted the North Tower and flight 175 crashed into the South Tower. This resulted in the collapse of both tower buildings. One of the remaining hijacked planes (flight 77) crashed into the Pentagon near Washington D.C. The fourth aircraft (flight 93) crashed in a field in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to take control of the hijacked aircraft.
In all, 2974 people died (not counting the hijackers). Among those killed in New York were 343 firefighters. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, approximately 16,000 people occupied the World Trade Center Complex below the impact zones. Incredibly, only about 15% of the World Trade Center occupants were killed. This is due, in large part, to the brave firefighters of FDNY (Fire Department of New York) who aided the evacuees to safety. Tragically, 343 firefighters lost their lives. "Firefighters Angel" (created by Keith at www.ArtAid.org) is a tribute to the brave firefighters of FDNY who gave their lives on 9/11/01. Click on the picture to see a larger version. Many firefighters across the country and world have placed stickers on their helmets and on their vehicles with the #343 on it. This is done in loving tribute to those fellow brothers who paid the ultimate price on 9/11/01. We will never forget your sacrifice!!!
